Former Arsenal legend, Paul Merson, has blamed Manchester United and Arsenal for Chelsea’s success in signing Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid.
While the Arsenal legend hailed Niguez, he claimed United and Arsenal should have made moves to sign the Spain international.
The 26-year-old joined the Stamford Bridge outfit on loan with an option to buy on transfer deadline day.
Saul Niguez was a key player as Atletico Madrid won La Liga last term, making 33 appearances.
Merson said United and Arsenal should have entered the race for his signature.
“What a phenomenal signing that is. He’s in his prime,” Merson told Starsport
“Amazing…I don’t know why teams like Manchester United and Arsenal didn’t go in for him. Look at their midfields.
“United have Paul Pogba but he can’t play in a two and then it’s Fred, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic.
“And Arsenal ended up handing a new contract to Granit Xhaka… The difference in class is enormous.”
