Former Chelsea star, Glen Johnson, has advised the club’s striker, Timo Werner to change position in order to salvage his Chelsea career.
This advice came following the arrival of Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan earlier this summer.
Werner who mounted Chelsea’s top-9 position last season was only able to score six goals in 35 Premier League appearances.
There were rumours that the German could leave Stamford Bridge in a bid for more game time.
However, Johnson believes Werner still has a future at the club, but may have to look at playing on the wing in order to cement a spot in the first team.
“It’s clear that Timo Werner hasn’t performed to the standard we all know he’s capable of, but he wasn’t brought in to play as an out and out striker. Romelu Lukaku hasn’t come in to replace Werner within the squad,” he told BonusCodeBets via Metro UK.
“Werner can still play a big part, but his performances must improve.
“Timo has a future at Chelsea, but playing on the wing is his only option, and even then, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic all start ahead of him based on what we’ve seen so far.
“Although, things change very quickly in football, it only takes an injury for Timo to get another chance, and if he hits the ground running, he can re-establish himself in the side.”
Chelsea have won two and drew one of their first three Premier League matches so far.
A win over Crystal Palace and Arsenal and a draw against Liverpool place Thomas Tuchel’s men on seven points and joint table toppers with West Ham United, Liverpool and Manchester United.
